Freshman Year

As a freshman you best prepare for college by becoming a good high school student.
  • Become the best student you can be. Learn to study each night, reviewing your notes from class once you’ve finished your homework assignments.
  • Learn to ask for help. Good St. Christopher’s students know when they need help in understanding a concept or improving their organization and study skills. Your teachers are anxious to help, and you will begin to develop a more adult relationship with them.
  • All students in grades 9-11 take the PSAT in October as practice for the standardized tests you will need to take later in high school.
  • Look for ways to become involved in the school community. Join clubs and sign up for community service opportunities. Don’t be hesitant to try something outside your comfort zone.
  • If you are interested in playing a sport in college talk to your coach and attend the Athletic Recruiting Night program.
  • Recognize that things count in a way they haven’t before now. You are now building the academic record that you will have when you apply to college in three years, and while the freshman year is not a make or break year, you can’t erase your mistakes academically.
  • You don’t need to have the answers, but you need to understand the questions. High school and college are part of your personal journey of self-discovery, where you are trying to answer the following questions: Who am I? What are my strengths, both in the classroom and in activities? What do I care about? You may not have answers to those questions now, but you’ll figure the answers out over the next couple of years.
