Entrepreneur Carter Hayes ‘14 starts his own microbusiness.
Senior Carter Hayes will be an independent contractor offering youth tennis instruction at Granite Swim and Tennis Club this summer. Inspired by Mr. Doug Bader’s Social Entrepreneurship class, Carter designed his own “microbusiness” to secure summer employment.
Carter approached Granite Swim and Tennis Club after learning about “microbusinesses” in Mr. Doug Bader’s Social Entrepreneurship class. The class inspired Carter to start his own “microbusiness” to secure a summer job. As a senior, Carter wanted to find a summer job that he could return to in future summers. He also wanted to pursue his love of tennis at the same time.
Granite is only open in the summer, so the schedule fit perfectly. Carter said he saw the need at Granite for a youth tennis instructor to run clinics and camps. Working with Mr. Bader and a local tennis pro, Carter designed a business plan to pitch to the Board at Granite. “ The class prepared me for the "pitch" process because during class we would pose potential questions that I might get asked and we brainstormed responses” said Carter.
Mr. Bader remarked that, “Carter has shown wonderful initiative and business skills in making this happen”.
With his proposal accepted, Carter anticipates that he will even have to add a few employees to keep up with the demand for the new programs. Carter will be an independent contractor and not an employee of Granite.
“The process was tough at first, but after I realized what I was trying to accomplish with each step and with the final product, that was the turning point. I knew the brand I wanted”, said Carter.
Carter is now crafting a marketing campaign under the guidance of Mr. Bader to promote his new business to the members of Granite.
