Varsity Football falls to Fork Union Military Academy.

Despite controlling the line of scrimmage throughout the game, turnovers did in the Saints against a talented Fork Union squad.

The Saints outgained the Blue Devils in total offense 321 yards to 226 yards, as well as first downs (14 to 2). In fact, St. Christopher’s led in every statistical category except the two most critical – turnovers and points. The defense was led by Chris Gill who had 5 tackles, 4 for losses and 3 sacks. Kyle Wittenauer also had a big game defensively posting 4 tackles, 2 for losses and 2 sacks. Yet, turnovers were the difference in the game, with the Saints surrendering the ball 7 times (3 fumbles, 4 interceptions), compared to Fork Union’s one fumble and one interception. In the second quarter alone, turnovers gave FUMA the ball in St. Christopher’s territory at the 31, 36, 31 and 6 yard lines – three of these short drives resulted in FUMA scores.

The final blow came with four minutes remaining in the game. The Saints had battled back throughout the second half, with the defense continuing to stifle FUMA – holding them to negative 13 yards to that point in the half. The offense also continued to move effectively via a balanced attack that featuring Thompson Brown on the ground and the Rob Vozenilek to Seth Wagner combination in the air. The most impressive display was a 15-play, 80 yard drive that consumed the entire third quarter. With the Blue Devils beginning to scramble, the Saints again drove to the 11-yard line, looking to bring the game back to within a field goal. That’s when FUMA’s Antonio Markland snagged an interception and returned it 95 yards for a touchdown, sealing the game with under four minutes remaining. FUMA added an insurance TD following a final pick of a desperation-mode pass.

St. Christopher’s next faces Bishop Ireton High School (4-2) of Alexandria on Saturday, October 17 at 3:00pm.
