James Gilmore attends New England Center for Investigative Journalism Summer Workshop

Gilmore, a Junior, has plans to continue studying journalism at the college level
Over the summer James Gilmore '19 attended the New England Center for Investigative Reporting's workshop for high school students held at Boston University. James and other program participants learned some of the basics of journalism including how to write a proper lede in a story. Program participants got the chance to meet with Sacha Pfeiffer, a member of the The Boston Globe investigative reporting team that inspired the 2015 film "Spotlight."

Reflecting on the experience, James writes,

My experience at the workshop was great. I learned the proper way to structure an investigative article by starting with an anecdotal lead. This means you give an example of an individual story of someone. I also learned that when writing an article, your most important information must go in chronological order. I learned how to see public records and what laws protect journalists. Also proper writing rules, for example not using bias or writing lible statements that are not true. Overall I had an awesome experience exploring the city of Boston and having new friends that I can remember was the best part.

James explains that journalism is most likely what he will study in college.
