Head of Upper School Tony Szymendera is well known at St. Christopher's for his famous "Tips from Tony," remarks he makes in chapel to encourage the boys to be their best selves. Recently, Tony offered the following tips to the Upper School boys.
Tip #1
“I wanted an electric train for Christmas, but I got the saxophone instead.”--Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band
Sometimes we get what we need, not what we want. Be open to recognizing the difference and embracing the opportunity being presented to you.
Tip #2
"We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup." --Buddy the Elf from Elf
Life may make you older, but you don’t have to be “old.” Always retain a bit of silly in your life, especially at the holidays.
Tip #3
“Once again, we come to the Holiday Season, a deeply religious time that each of us observes, in his own way, by going to the mall of his choice.” --Columnist, writer, humorist, and Haverford College alumni Dave Barry
If you need a gift for mom or that special someone, skip the mall, skip Walmart, skip Target. Get on your phone or computer and go to etsy.com. Etsy is a website focused on items from small vendors across the country. Trust me, you’ll get huge points for even knowing what Etsy is.
Tip #4
“Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?”--Clarence the Angel from It’s a Wonderful Life
Regardless of the gifts you give or receive, remember that you are the greatest gift of all to so many in your family, in your circle of friends, and in your class and this school.
Tip #5
“The two most joyous times of the year are Christmas morning and the end of school.”--Legendary Godfather of Shock Rock Alice Cooper
Remember, as much as you like vacations and the end of classes, teachers and principals love them just as much!
Good luck on exams, enjoy the break, have a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, and a Happy New Year. Come back safe and refreshed. See you all in 2017!
