Skyler Petrie '17 delivered a game-winning RBI single to score Benny Bencks '16 in the bottom of the ninth inning as the varsity baseball team downed St. Anne's-Belfield 4-3 Tuesday afternoon.
"I was just trying to hit the ball hard and get on base to keep the rally going," Petrie said.
The Saints trailed three times by a run during the game, quickly tying the game in the bottom third, sixth and seventh inning.
Down to their last out, a passed ball got away from STAB and StC pinch-runner Will Thomas '17 slid into third ahead of a throw that went into left field. Thomas outraced the throw home from left to tie the game at 3 and send it into extras.
Maddison Furman '18 earned the win with two strong innings of relief in the eighth and ninth, including getting a groundout with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning, setting up Petrie's heroics.
"I just think we are a really tough team that never gives up," Petrie said. "We're always fighting."
Starter Jeb Bemiss '16 struck out 10 STAB batters and went 2 for 4 at the plate. Hayden Mitchell '17 was 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI. The Saints head to STAB Friday to complete the two-game set.
