Varsity Tennis Beats Benedictine

Pontus Hiort
Saints move to 2-0 on the season.
After yesterday’s win against Collegiate, on Wednesday the varsity tennis team traveled to the Abbey to take on Benedictine. The Saints did not let up and came away with a 9-0 win.

During singles play, senior Charlie McCray continued his strong play as he gave his team a 1-0 lead after a good match at number four. Sophomore Jackson Barkstrom also played well at number five, and it was especially nice to see him attack the net with frequency. At number one singles, junior Matthew Fernandez earned another nice win. Senior Julian Mills added to the team’s lead after a commanding performance at number three. At number two, junior Stephen McCray used his powerful forehand to outmaneuver his opponent. Freshman Corbin Ellington completed the singles sweep by winning his number six singles in a nice fashion.

The Saints continued their strong play in doubles with Matthew and Charlie at one, Stephen and Jackson at two, and Corbin and Julian at number three, all winning their matches in a convincing manner. In all, it was a good effort from both teams, and it was nice to see the Saints move to 2-0 on the season. The team will now have one day of practice before it welcomes a very strong Cape Henry Collegiate Team to the courts at Pepper Avenue on Friday. It should be a very exciting match between two good squads that should provide for some high quality and exciting tennis.
