Nick Sherod '16 committed to the University of Richmond Friday, continuing his career with coach Chris Mooney and the Spiders.

"I picked Richmond because the combination of the journalism program and playing for a team with a strong basketball tradition was appealing," Sherod said.

St. Christopher's all-time leading scorer (2,019 points), with another year to play, Sherod averaged 25 points, 9.5 rebounds, three assists and two steals per game as a junior, leading StC to a 22-7 record and a VISAA state semifinal berth.

Richmond was one of the first schools to offer Sherod, and never wavered from its recruitment. Sherod had 18 other offers, including William & Mary and Mount St. Mary's, who he considered strongly.

"I also would like to thank the other schools that recruited me," Sherod said. "Each school made the decision tough for me and I would like to again thank them. I'd also like to thank my coaches and family for helping me through this process and being supportive."

Said StC coach Hamill Jones: "Nick is an incredible person and player who comes from a great family. It is exciting that Nick will continue his career at a school that combines outstanding academics with a storied basketball tradition"

After a strong summer performance with Team Loaded VA 17-U, including a win at the Adidas Invitational in Las Vegas last week, the 43% 3-point shooter picked up numerous other offers, but UR was the choice.

"It was a blessing to go through this process," Sherod said, "and I feel like I made the best decision for myself at the end of the day."
