O'Neill the hero

Junior scores goal in 90th minute to top Collegiate.
Noah O'Neill '16 bumped his knee in the first half against Collegiate's keeper. That hobbled him a bit.

He had some other opportunities in the second half to score on a gimpy knee, as did other Saints, to no avail.

Nothing would connect.

Until the 90th minute, when Ben Vaeth '16 found Kameron Holloway '15 at midfield, who passed to O'Neill. Not known for fancy ball handling, O'Neill put on speed, added in a nice juke move and deposited the game-winning goal to break Collegiate's heart in a 1-0 win Tuesday afternoon.

"It was kind of a loose ball and I saw Kameron getting a break on it," O'Neill said. "It was pretty much one-on-one. One defender came and I just cut around him. It went in the corner. It was lucky but it was a good win."

It was a great win.

The Saints (19-1-1) outshot the Cougars 19-12, and nine to three with shots on goal.

Collegiate had four corners in the first half as StC managed one. But that changed in the second half, as StC won the corner battle 6-2, keeping the pressure on Collegiate's strong keeper Sawyer Gaffney.

The dam finally broke.

After playing to a 0-0 tie about a month ago, the Saints got a leg up on the Cougars.

Now another major test is on the horizon as Woodberry Forest visits StC Friday at 4 pm riding an 11-game winning streak. The Tigers are unbeaten in Prep League play.
