Ames' big day propels Saints to victory

by Shelton Moss '17
Running back Jens Ames '18 ran for 159 yards and a score, Hayden Mitchell '17 caught two long touchdown passes, and the Saints varsity football team scored 21 unanswered points in the final ten minutes to overcome Bishop Ireton 35–21 on Saturday afternoon at Knowles Field.

It was a seesaw affair for most of the day, as the two teams traded touchdowns back and forth. Following an Ireton touchdown, quarterback John Damgard '17 hooked up with Mitchell for a 63-yard score early in the second. It was the first of two touchdown passes between the two, as Mitchell caught another TD in the fourth quarter, this time for 46 yards, that knotted the game at 21 apiece.

But the story of the game was Ames. The junior back ran for a career-high 159 yards on only 22 carries, including a 39-yard score late in the fourth that put the game away for St. Chris (5–2). In all, the Saints amassed 226 rushing yards, and over 500 yards of total offense. Justin Jasper '18 (8 catches, 115 yards) also got in on the scoring action, hauling in a pair of TD catches from Damgard, the latter of which gave the Saints the lead in the final frame.

On defense, Paul Thompson '17 led the way with 12 tackles, including three for loss. Sophomore Charlie Boggs impressed as well, recording nine tackles in the winning effort. As a unit, St. Chris held the Cardinals (0–8) to 2-of-13 on third-down conversions, and allowed fewer than two yards per carry.

The Saints, having won five consecutive games for the first time since 2004, will look to continue their momentum as they return to Prep League play with a home matchup against Woodberry Forest on Senior Day. Opening kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
