    Through farm talk and folk art, your young artist will create “Grade A” works of art worthy of a country fair blue ribbon! Our friend from A.W.A.R.E, Susan Sheperson, will bring a variety of livestock to inspire our creative energy while creating art in the style of Mootisse and Pigcasso! From papier-mâché pigs to 3D ceramic chickens, we will have fun creating the farm animals that we will meet each day of this extraordinary week. Paint, papier-mâché, and clay will be just a few of the materials we explore in a week your child will not want to miss! This camp is sure to fill quickly! All art materials are provided.

In this camp, students who are new to the game of chess (little or no prior knowledge of chess) can meet and learn with other players about the basics, including how to name and move all the pieces while exploring all types and sizes of chess sets from Lego Chess to Super Mario Chess to Giant Outdoor Chess. Your camper will have dynamic opportunities to discover, learn, and play each day through activity challenges, puzzles, quick studies, the incorporation of technology and other strategy games like giant four-in-row and building an epic marble race.   • Summer SAT Preparation I

    By preparing for the SATs, students can become familiar with the test content and structure as well as gain confidence in their own ability. Students will be given tools, resources, and personalized feedback to help them practice their skills.  Individual techniques will be reviewed in class and students will have the opportunity to complete 3 practice tests for homework that will then be used to learn strategies, strengths, and areas for improvement the next day. This one-week-long class (8 hours total) is a great opportunity for students to obtain personal experience and feel comfortable to ask questions in a small group setting.

    Baking, Sewing, Creative Arts, Science Experiments, Games, Tea Party and More! While we encourage everyone to bring their dolls and plenty of enthusiasm, the camp is so much more than just “playing with dolls.” Girls will have a blast as they unleash their creativity by integrating the components of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) and history. Our American Doll Campers will bake a yummy dessert; sew a quilt for their doll, create an art masterpiece, study historical characters, perform some stunning science experiments such as: creating one of the earliest forms of animation and build their own phenakistoscope, learn the chemistry behind making butter, and experiment with the process of evaporation by making some salt sticks. They will also become engineers by building a candle-powered steamboat.

    Get ready to journey down under and outback for a week of imaginative fun in Australia! During this colorful week our campers might take a walkabout through the outback to meet up with kangaroos, travel into the bush looking for wombats, or end up taking in the sights of Sydney!  All of this creative exploration will lead to understanding Aboriginal art & so much more! We will use clay to sculpt a mosaic crocodile, kangaroo, dingo, or another animal of your child’s choosing. Our paintings will be inspired by the art of Peter Cromer and other contemporary Australian artists. From ancient petroglyphs to modern art, your child will come to know the beautiful world of Australia! All materials are provided.

Students will research facts about each animal, read, sequence events, and compare and contrast elements of the story. In addition, we’ll fine tune mathematical skills as we measure and mix-up cookies, cupcakes, pancakes, and muffins. Students will use what they’ve learned to create math story problems and write their own If You Give... story. Don’t miss out on the wonderful world of “What If”!

    This is the first camp ever offered by Club SciKidz! Campers learn the science behind Hollywood’s special effects. Activities will demonstrate concepts related to light, sound, perception, illusion, and model building. One of the great features of this camp is that all campers will create (and take home!) a movie using techniques in Claymation and Stop-Motion Animation. Lessons include plot development, storyboarding, set building, filming, and sound effects. Campers will also learn various special effects make-up techniques working with the same materials used by professional make-up artists.   • Jr. Robot Creator LEGO® Camp

    Campers get a head start on simple robotics using LEGO® WeDo™ components and easy to use software. Our young creators will build models, attach sensors, and motors that are plugged into a computer, and configure behaviors using a simple programming tool. Counselors guide campers through their first 12 robot models, which include a variety of animals, soccer players, amazing mechanisms, and adventure stories. If ready, campers then move to advanced building and programming projects that include: a Race car, Ferris Wheel, and Carousel. As the week draws to a close, campers can utilize their skills they have learned to build an X-wing Fighter or Marine Helicopter. Parents are invited to join us on Friday’s Family Day to view their child’s creations. Please note that campers will NOT be able to take any project home because it is a LEGO camp and they will be using expensive WeDo™ kits in the camp.

  • Summer SAT Preparation II

    By preparing for the SATs, students can become familiar with the test content and structure as well as gain confidence in their own ability. Students will be given tools, resources, and personalized feedback to help them practice their skills.  Individual techniques will be reviewed in class and students will have the opportunity to complete 3 practice tests for homework that will then be used to learn strategies, strengths, and areas for improvement the next day. This one-week-long class (8 hours total) is a great opportunity for students to obtain personal experience and feel comfortable to ask questions in a small group setting.

    Sir Isaac Newton never had this much fun! Campers will be immersed into our toy maker’s workshop as they construct and take home several different toy projects during the week. Each project will teach an important physical property. Sample Projects: Pocket Rocket, Sponge Ball Slingshot, Marshmallow Shooter, Snap Circuit Board. In addition: Campers will learn why kaleidoscopes produce such beautiful colors, build and play with a marshmallow shooter, and create the classic rubber band ball.

Learn how to find resources; make a shelter; craft tools, armor, and weapons, and protect yourself from monsters. Campers also create their own adventure map as design, production, and test playing guide them. Campers learn how to work as a team as they take on the real-world jobs of programmer, game designer, artist, and architect. This camp is for beginners and those already playing the game.   • Driver’s Education

    Instructors will guide soon-to-be drivers through the classroom portion of driver’s education for eight days in August. The class will include the Virginia Department of Education certified 11-module driver’s education curriculum. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. The seven required behind-the-wheel sessions can be scheduled after the students complete the classroom course. (Behind-the-wheel scheduling and payment will be coordinated with RVA Driving Academy.) 

    Please be aware that due to the COVID there is currently a wait period for behind the wheel training. Immediate scheduling for behind the wheel training is not guaranteed.
