Lower School Specialty Sessions

Extend the Day!

Early-Bird Hours: Get a headstart on camp with our Early-Bird hours. This program runs from 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. daily. Counselors will escort campers to their camp session at 9:00 a.m. The cost of the program is $35 a week.

Hot Summer Deal! Does your camper want to play all day? 
Receive a $70 DISCOUNT! Register your camper for a morning or afternoon session combined with an add-on Day Camp for a whole day of fun! (No discount on outside vendor camps.) Our staff will meet your child at pick up from their morning camp and escort them to Day Camp. 

Don't forget! You can sign up for Early-Bird Hours, 7:30 - 9:00 am and After-Hours, 4:00 - 6:00 pm, if needed.

  • Boys that BUILD

Construct?​ Boys that BUILD (Boys Using Innovation to Learn and Design), is the perfect opportunity for him to strengthen his fine motor skills while problem solving and learning to collaborate with friends.   • Piano Adventures

    Rising 1st - 5th Graders

    In addition to individual coaching, campers will do fun theory activities by learning and writing notes and music symbols. We will do ear training exercises, as well as build skills in note and rhythm reading. Each child will have access to their own keyboard during camp, and there will be an informal recital on the last day!

  • Animal Planet ART

    Whether it’s grizzly bears in the mountains, zebras at the zoo, or Old MacDonald’s cows
    on the farm, our campers will step into the world of animals. But hold your horses! This isn’t a one trick pony week, it’s an Art and Story Week! Meg Foster will guide the children through a week filled with color and fantastic art inspired by the animals of the world. At the same time, Ali Pfautz, The Story Lady, will guide the children as they create animal stories. Anything goes! Campers might imagine four legged critters who talk or winged birds who set out for adventure. One thing’s for sure, this week will be the cat’s meow. Our week will end with a spectacular performance for our families! (Campers will be divided into age-appropriate small groups.)

Rocks, minerals, and fossils are studied, along with a variety of related projects such as Dinosaur Model, Panning for Gems and Minerals, Building a Volcano, Casting a Sea Shell Fossil, and Dinosaur Dig. Special emphasis is placed on observation, inference, data collection, and just plain old fun. This is Geology 101!

    Come build anything you can possibly imagine using Minecraft™, a block-building sandbox game with no set rules. Let’s pretend you’re alone in a mysterious new world full of hidden dangers. You have only minutes to find food and shelter before darkness falls. What do you do? What we teach you might just save your life! Learn how to find resources; make a shelter; craft tools, armor, and weapons, and protect yourself from monsters. Boys and girls will create their own adventure map and learn how to work as a team when they take on the real-world jobs of programmer, game designer, artist, and architect. This camp is for beginners and those already playing the game.

  • Racing Game Design Camp (full-day)

    Join the most spectacular racing universe! Boys and girls will use the software, TrackMania United™ to create their own tracks using a “building block” process. Unlike most other racing games, the TrackMania™ series lets the player race a track as many times as they want without time limits. Campers will be given design and build challenges each day and can customize their cars, track ramps, and stunts and play against each other.

  • Racing with Robotics Session I

    What do twigs, metal, cardboard, clay and glass all have in common? They are just a few of the art materials we will construct and paint as we design, create and celebrate the makers within us all!  There will be plenty of tinkering and exploring for your young artists as they create their masterpieces. We will look at the works of many makers, including the whimsical work of Rodney "Rodrigo" McCoubrey and his vivid imagery.

    This is sure to be one of our most popular weeks and we hope your young maker will join us for an action-packed week in The Art Lab! All art materials provided. (Campers will be divided into age-appropriate small groups.)

  • Ultimate LEGOs Session II

    Become a LEGO® brickmaster! Freestyle by building your own imaginative designs or build one of many sets individually and in small groups using our massive lego collection. Computation, configuration, and developing strategic plans in a variety of construction activities will be offered in this fun class with LEGOs® as the primary teaching and learning tool. Boys and girls will strengthen math and problem-solving skills without even realizing it. It is not necessary for campers to have participated in LEGOs® I to register for this program.

  • Outdoor Adventures Session I

    Join us for an outdoor adventure in the James River Park System and other area parks.
    From fishing to mountain biking to snorkeling, to just looking under rocks in the river to see what’s there, kids are encouraged to explore the natural environment of the James River Park System. Having fun, learning for themselves, and building a base that boys and girls will carry for life are just some of the things they will acquire in our wonderful outdoor playground. So put on your outdoor gear, tie your shoes tight, and prepare for some adventure and excitement.

Meet real professional Crime Scene Investigators, K-9 Handlers, and Forensic Pathologists and use their actual tools to collect evidence. Campers will discover how crimes are solved and learn the important role biology, chemistry, and physics play a major role in each investigation. Crime Scene Analysis,
 Blood and Fiber Analysis, Handwriting Analysis, Fingerprinting, and DNA Analysis are just a few of the exciting techniques you will use to solve crimes.

Pocket Rocket, Sponge Ball Slingshot, Marshmallow Shooter, and Snap Circuit Board will teach important physical properties. Come learn why kaleidoscopes produce such beautiful colors, build and play with a marshmallow shooter, and create the classic rubber band ball.

Who knows, you may even help win the House Cup!

  • Championship Chess Session I

    This camp builds chess skills through instruction and free play. It is designed for both beginners and advanced players. Classes include instruction for Openings, Middle Game, Tactics, and Endgames. Camp activities include the use of a chess clock, game notation, playing chess using our giant lawn chess set, a tournament with prizes, free play, and a chess variant called “bug house”.

  • Young Surgeons

    Are you ready to become a physician or surgeon? Are you ready to learn important life saving techniques? Get ready to use medical instruments so you can diagnose patients and give shots. We will explore the structures and physiology of the amazing human body through projects such as Frog and Sheep Heart Dissection, Making Herbal Medicines, Learning to Stitch a Wound, Build a Lung Model, First Aid Techniques, and Splinting. Each camper will receive a stethoscope, dissection kit, first aid supplies and take their “Medical Boards” at the end of the week to receive their certificate.

  • Jr. Robot Creators with LEGOs

    Rising 1st - 3rd Graders
    July 8 - 12

    If you love LEGOs®, and are ready to take it to the next level, come explore simple robotics using LEGO® WeDo™ components and easy-to-use software. Our young creators will build models, attach sensors, and motors that are plugged into a computer, and configure behaviors using a simple programming tool. Counselors guide campers through their first 12 robot models, which include a variety of animals, soccer players, amazing mechanisms, and adventure stories. They will then move to advanced building and programming projects that include a Race car, Ferris Wheel, and Carousel. Boys and girls will utilize the skills they have learned to build an X-wing Fighter or Marine Helicopter. Parents are invited to join us on Friday’s Family Day to view their child’s creations. Campers will also complete a small LEGO® project that they will be able to take home.

Our Jr. Chemists will love examining the results of crazy chemical concoctions such as Blob Explosions, Funny Putty, Magic Bubble Paint, Make Your Own Chewing Gum and other wacky, wild and crazy creations!

    Our imaginations will take us to far away destinations while we create with clay, paint, paper mache and more! The amazing work created by washedashore.org will be our inspiration as we look at debris that washes ashore and is recycled into beautiful sculptures that help remind us to keep our beaches and oceans clean.  Amazing works of art will be on board for this colorful week-long journey! (Campers will be divided into age-appropriate small groups.)

Campers will meet practitioners and pet groomers, and they will be involved with several hands-on experiments with their very own medical kit. They will get hands-on experience on animal organ dissection and learn to use a syringe and suturing techniques too. Come learn about animal behavior, cancer research in animals, clinical procedure, first aid and dentistry care, diseases and parasites, entomology, microscopy, and anatomy. And you will also meet our CPR dog too!

  • Space Engineers

    Boys and girls will design and build structures and space vehicles for living on far away planets using LEGO® bricks. Campers will learn about the Earth, moon, stars, and planets as well as the scientific topics of force, friction, simple machines, and gravity. They will step aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to learn about propulsion, friction, and more. Counselors will assign specific projects each day that include: a rotating satellite, space buggy, a stunning spaceship, terrestrial homes that can withstand alien atmospheres, and a host of other exciting projects. Campers will also build and launch two Estes Rockets as they learn about the physics of space travel. Parents are invited to join us on Friday’s Family Day to view their camper’s creations. This is a camp your child won’t want to miss!

    Do you want to create your own video game? Campers will use Fusion 2.5 from Clickteam to learn how to build two-dimensional video games. This software provides an easy-to-use game-authoring environment that allows campers to create many types of computer games, screensavers, and other applications. We will get started with a Space Shooter Game where we will learn how to create moving backgrounds, add scores and lives, design instructions and titles, create waves of enemies, and transition screens. Campers will create and take home a movie using techniques in Claymation and Stop-Motion Animation. Lessons include plot development, storyboarding, set building, filming, and sound effects. Campers will also learn various techniques that professional makeup artists use for special effects. They will simulate cuts, bruises, artificial blood, and old age.   • QuadCopter Aerial Robotics

    Let’s explore aerial robotics technology! Boys and girls will tackle scenarios and challenges, hone aviation flight skills, and learn robotics. Campers will build prototypes and run test scenarios for safety, search, and rescue. They will build a quad rotor designed for a specific first responder mission. They will deliver pharmaceuticals to people in a disaster area, maneuver the copter close to a (mock) hazardous waste container, and search for a lost hiker. Campers will even operate and take home their own hand-size quadcopter at the end of the week! Club SciKidz is partnering with OnPoynt Aerial Systems for this camp.

  • Jr. Meteorologists

    Welcome all meteorologists! Boys and girls will discover how weather works, measure and record rainfall, create a water cycle wheel, build a weather station, and learn about the Greenhouse Effect. Campers will create a terrarium, design their own tornadoes, make “snow” during the summer, and more! Before you know it, your Jr. Meteorologist will be on the 6 o’clock news doing the weather. Throughout the week they will take home sun prints, UV beads, a wind vane, anemometer, and a very cool rain stick. Campers will end the week demonstrating the three states of matter by making and eating some delicious ice cream.
