Janis signs with Maryland

Two-time state wrestling champ will compete in Big Ten
Senior wrestler Robert Janis will continue his wrestling career at Maryland.

The two-time state champion and two-time National Preps placer considered or visited many schools, including North Carolina, Virginia, N.C. State, George Mason, Old Dominion and VMI.

"It's been a long process figuring out where I'm going to conintue my wrestling career, but I think Maryland is definitely the place for me," Janis said after practice Wednesday. "They just had the best balance of great academics - their school his top-notch - and fantastic coaching. I really felt like I meshed with the guys on the team."

Those guys will be competing next season in the Big Ten. When he committed, Janis had no clue the Terrapins were leaving the ACC for the Big Ten, the unquestioned toughest wrestling conference in the nation. Janis went from excited to through the roof as his dream of wrestling in the top conference came to fruition.

"In terms of a talented young guy who dreams about wrestling at the highest level...that creates that opportunity and that challenge," StC AD and wrestling coach John Gordon said about MD's move. "He's excited about it. I'm proud of him. He loves wrestling. He's really sold out to do the best he can do as a wrestler. Having an opportunity like this is a nice regard for his passion and for his hard work. He's a great role model for the other boys."

Janis joins an impressive group of commitments in the Class of 2013. Cole Carns (High Point, Lacrosse), Jack English (Virginia, Football), Porter Reinhart (William & Mary, Baseball), Rodney Williams (Drexel, Basketball) and Charlie Yorgen (East Carolina, Baseball) are all Division I-bound as well with several talented student-athletes from the class still undecided.
