BUILD (Boys Using Innovation to Learn and Design): Board of Governors and students collaborate on BUILD projects

Current and past members of the Board of Governors explored divisional classrooms this morning to see the new Boys Using Innovation to Learn and Design (BUILD) initiative in action. BUILD takes the best of the STEM/STEAM approaches and combines them with a broad, skill-based, project-centered focus. The group observed kindergarten boys design and build castles, first graders design, construct and test kites, and heard from upper school boys about their high tech robots.
The group returned from the tour and participated in an exercise led by upper school students from the inaugural Make class. Each group collaborated to create an innovative video game controller. Using design thinking, the groups tinkered and played with different objects to construct their controller. The prototypes were presented and used to successfully play a video game.

St. Christopher’s School is uniquely positioned to develop this dynamic approach for boys, JK-12. Kindergarten boys design and build castles, middle schoolers use simulations to conceptualize and construct bridges, and our upper school boys create prototypes of their ideas using high tech tools such as: 3D printers and Arduinos (microcontrollers). BUILD provides the framework for our boys to tinker, play, investigate, collaborate, and create innovative solutions to real world problems.
