Smith Shocks the Saints at the Buzzer in Comeback Victory

by Austin Levin '23
The Spartans only lead against the Saints was at the final buzzer when Teven Smith knocked down a 3-point basket to give Steward a 53-50 victory. Smith reached 30 points on the night, more than half of Steward's points.

Heading into the 4th quarter of play, Saint Christopher's had a comfortable 44-34 lead over the Spartans. Yet the Saints struggled particularly on offensive side of the ball in the final quarter, scoring only 6 points. In every other quarter of the contest, the Saints put up at least twelve points.

Zach Murphy '23, Brandon Jennings '24, and Darius Gray '26 led the charge for the Saints, scoring 13 points each. Zach Murphy hit three shots from behind the arc as well as hitting a 3rd quarter buzzer beater mid range jumper and Darius Gray had another double double contributing 11 rebounds with his 13 points. Free throw shooting was a key factor in the Saints loss, for the Saints shot just 58.8% from the charity stripe as well as Steward's 15 points off the St. Christopher's 11 turnovers.

The Saints are next in action in the Henrico Holiday Hoops Tournament against Glen Allen High School on December 28th at 2:30 pm.
