Varsity Football earns 500th Program Win

by Wright Hilbert '24
Varsity Football moved to 4-0 on the season, knocking off Norfolk Academy 26-7 on Saturday, September 24. This was the 500th victory in the history of the varsity football program, dating back to its start in 1916.

"The football program's 500th win is really a wonderful milestone that speaks to all of the coaches, teams, and boys that have played football at St. Christopher's since 1916," current Saints head coach Lance Clelland said. "We are so blessed to have Coach Dick Kemper, our former Athletic Director and head football coach, around the program, which helps our current group of young men understand they are part of something larger than themselves at St. Christopher's."

StC's first varsity football coach was Thomas Rives in 1916. He was followed by William Gooch (1917-19), B.A. McIlhaney (1920-22), Hugh Brenaman (1923-48), Aubrey Hill (1949-53), John Cook (1954-57), Chuck Motley (1958-61), Bob Herzog (1962-71), Kemper (1972-99), Paul Padalino (2000-08), Michael Turner (2009-13) and the current and 12th coach in the program's history in Clelland.

Coach Clelland has a strong junior class that once again stepped up Saturday. Brandon Jennings scored two touchdowns out of the air from QB Kahlil Nash, and captain Henry Omohundro drove in a one-yard touchdown.

Clelland seems to have developed some confidence in his quarterback with Kahlil's passing attempts increasing with each game.

In addition to the offensive success, junior kicker Jack Slokker booted in two 26-yard field goals.

Varsity Football caps off its home stretch this Saturday, October 1 against the 3-1 Benedictine Cadets at 3 p.m.
