Griffin O'Ferrall '21 was named Gatorade Virginia Baseball Player of the Year Tuesday, June 29. O'Ferrall is the first student-athlete from St. Christopher's to earn the honor in the 36-year history of the program.

The University of Virginia signee was a four-year starter at St. Christopher's, culminating in Prep League, VISAA and now Gatorade Virginia player-of-the-year honors in his senior year.

O'Ferrall hit .449 in 2021 with five homers. He set school records for runs scored (47), knocked in 26 RBI and swiped 20 bases. He led the Saints to a 22-1-1 record and had StC in the state-title game in each season that was contested (2018 champs, 2019 & 2021 runner-up).

The award also recognizes high standards of academic achievement and character. O'Ferrall maintained a B average in the classroom and was active in volunteering for various endeavors, including relief efforts following Hurricane Harvey, and the residential recovery program The Healing Place.

"Griffin O'Ferrall has the ability to control a baseball game like few others," baseball coach Tony Szymendera said. "He makes difficult plays seem easy and he puts immediate pressure on the defense when he's on base. At the plate, he hits for average and power, to the point where most infielders take a step back when he's in the box because the ball is coming at them hard every time."

With the award, O'Ferrall has the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of his choosing. He is also now eligible for the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award, which will be announced in July.
