This summer, the Class of 2022 built on classroom learning by joining organizations across Richmond to experience professional life. 

Coordinated by the StC Parents Association, the program matched boys with organizations that reflect their interests. From healthcare organizations to financial advisory firms, Saints immersed themselves in environments to inform their college and career paths. 

“I got a better feel for how work would be in this field,” said Jackson Hill ’22, who spent his externship doing fieldwork in the James River and touring VCU’s Rice Rivers Center. 

Hill believes the program helps Upper School students get a feel for certain fields as they begin their college searches. “I definitely felt ready for this,” said Hill, “It can really give juniors and seniors a sense of what they want to study in college and what kind of college they want to go to based on their externship.”

The range of externships was wide-ranging. Phillip Thompson ’22 joined the Alliance Group, a public relations firm for a week. Preston Herrington ’22, Mason Carter ’22, Cole Hayes ’22 and Luke Gathright ’22 spent a week at the Spy Rock Real Estate Group, where they learned about construction, design and engineering, property management and real estate finance. At the end of the week, the boys gave a presentation based on a case study to the firm’s leadership team.

Kevin Omohundro ’22 spent time learning about the process of working in the public information and drug approval process in a pharmaceutical company. Omohundro, who plans on using what he learned this summer in an independent study in the fall, feels like he has a head start on the new year. He also plans to use what he learned in his college application essays. “I just know much more about this topic now,” he said. “It’s absolutely advantageous to do something like this early.”
