StC Alumnus Supports Richmond Art Community

Colin Knight '16 helps construct "work from home" tables for Richmond-area artists who have lost access to their workspaces.
When he lost access to his VCU furniture studio, Colin Knight ’16 improvised. He constructed an inexpensive bench from 2x4s and a temporary workspace for his design and craft projects.

Knight and his roommate Davis Boshears recognized a need for Richmond area artists who have lost access to studios and classrooms due to circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, the two furniture design students are building and delivering benches for $20, a small fee to cover material costs. Donations have provided benches for some artists who could not afford to pay.

Within two weeks, Knight and Boshears built and delivered 40 “work from home”  tables after word spread through Instagram with reposts by VCU and Richmond galleries. “The best part is seeing how excited [artists] got having a workspace for their home or apartment,” Knight said. “It’s interesting to see what a difference people can feel when they have a dedicated area in their home. It’s a really great thing to have in this really bad time.”

Meanwhile, Knight was recently named a Center for Craft Windgate-Lamar Fellow that recognizes the top emerging craft artists in the United States. The award provides $15,000 to pursue his art for one year. If all goes as planned, he leaves for England in January to study British mid-century modern design and then will create a body of work to exhibit. His passion for his craft is evident: “I love experimenting with new materials and furniture, be it sewing fabric for cushions or working with concrete or trying a new woodworking technique."
