StC Senior Builds Tutoring Program

Zach Harrison '20 turns a passion for helping others into a full-fledged StC partnership.

At StC, students are empowered to turn their ideas into reality. Zach Harrison '20 has connected his passion for tutoring younger kids into an official StC partnership with Fairfield Court Elementary in Richmond.

Harrison, who has worked with StC’s Saturday Academy, discovered a love of tutoring and wanted to find a way to make a difference in the broader community. “I have a passion for tutoring kids who didn’t have the same opportunities as us,” he said. I wanted to do an afterschool program that other students could do during the week.”

StC boys tutor younger students at Fairfield Court Elementary once a week, providing support in subjects such as math, English and reading.

With the help of the Rev. Whitney Edwards, StC’s Upper School chaplain, the program has expanded to include eight other Upper School tutors. Other boys enjoy the relationships they’ve built with the younger students. “Even after a full day of school, I still get really excited about going to Fairfield to hang out with all of them,” said Oliver Sabo '20. “I think that St. Christopher’s did a really good job of helping set this program up.”

Harrison hopes that the Fairfield Court kids find the program helpful for their studies, but he also believes that it provides a safe and friendly environment. “It’s a place for them to be happy and to be comfortable,” he said.
