Middle and Lower School Buddies Team Up to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

StC boys explore the civil rights movement and Dr. King’s legacy through contemporary art.
To celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., seventh and eighth graders teamed up with their Lower School buddies this morning to collaborate on an art project honoring Dr. King and his legacy.

Students watched videos, discussed Dr. King’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech and discussed his message and ideas.

Students were also introduced to the work of Kehinde Wiley, who recently created the “Rumors of War” sculpture at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts . The boys were asked to create works of art inspired by Wiley and his distinctive style, using examples of people they believe have lived Dr. King’s dream through their actions and deeds.

The project was a chance to learn about the history of the civil rights movement and to tie it to the current landscape of Richmond. “I wanted to respect Dr. King, but I also wanted to integrate this with something very contemporary that they could see and touch and feel in their community today,” said Middle School Librarian Lisa Brennan.
