Fifth-Graders Work at the Intersection of Art, Storytelling and Robot Tech

Fifth-graders use line-tracing Ozobots to collaborate on interactive art projects.
Science, stories, art and hands-on learning came together in our Lower School today. Using Ozobots, which are code-reading, line-traveling small robots, fifth-graders in Molly Trice’s class spent the morning building and problem-solving.

Students built replicas of settings from the book, “The Miraculous Voyage of Edward Tulane,” and carefully drew black marker paths for the Ozobots to travel on, mimicking the experiences and emotions of the characters in the book.

This hands-on learning lesson also required boys to work together, plan and learn how to adapt. “It’s all about collaboration,” said Trice. “Planning, coming up for a vision. It’s also a lot of cooperation.”

Like any technology, the Ozobots aren’t perfect, so the boys had to plan, test, and then come up with a new vision if their project encountered obstacles. “They have to sit down, divvy up the tasks, decide who’s going to do what. We’re seeing a lot of problem-solving today,” said Trice.
