Swanson '16 wins gold at Pan-Am

Now holds 7th best American time ever in the 400 IM.
Michigan swimmer Charlie Swanson '16 moved up the record books last week, shaving off more time in his top event, the 400 Individual Medley.

Swanson won the gold at the Pan American Games in Limu, Peru in the 400 IM in a time of 4:11.46. That mark is the 7th best time ever swam by an American - behind the likes of Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte - and the fourth fastest time clocked in the world in 2019.

The time was 32-hundredths of a second off the Pan Am Games record set in 2015 by Brazil's Thiago Pereira.

He bested second-place by nearly 8 seconds, and the rest of the field all scored times over 4:20. Swanson shattered his previous-best of 4:14.01.

He also took a second gold in the mixed 4x100 freestyle relay.

Now an internationally-ranked swimmer, Swanson seeks his third straight selection to the U.S. National Team.

"I went to two international meets before, but never really grasped how big it was until this year," Swanson told the Times-Dispatch. "Seeing the stands packed with a bunch of people you would never expect to see and cheering for you, that just adds to the hype and honor."
