Reunion Weekend 2019

Saints past and present gather under the pines, bid fond farewell to Development Director Delores Smith
Saints past and present gathered under the pines over the weekend of May 3-5, 2019 to celebrate their connection to St. Christopher's School.

On Friday morning, returning Saints enjoyed capsule classes, giving them an idea of what it's like to be in a St. Christopher's classroom today. After lunch, a group headed over to River City Roll for an afternoon of bowling before the Red and Gray Soireé party at the Historic Corridor on Friday evening.

During the Friday evening party, Head of School Mason Lecky made remarks about the retirement of longtime Development Director Delores Smith, who will retire next month after 41 years of service to the StC community. Mason said, "{Delores} has cultivated a sense of community, of engagement and affection. This can be measured in dollars and participation rates and fundraising campaigns, but it's also the intangible, and I think you feel it here tonight." Mason also announced Delores as the recipient of the 2019 Noell Travel Grant, an award made possible by the generosity of Charlie Noell '70 who wished to provide long tenured faculty and staff with opportunities for travel, exploration, and research. Delores and her husband Ron, longtime Upper School teacher of English and Writer-in-Residence, will enjoy this special gift together.

Alumni Board leader Sam Bemiss also took to the microphone to recognize Mimi Burke who will also be retiring next month after over thirty years of service in the Alumni and Development office.

On Saturday morning, alums enjoyed events such as an early bird run, a Glee Club reunion, a campus tour with Head of School Mason Lecky and a chapel talk from longtime faculty member Dr. Andy Smith. Andy spoke about the history of the space that has served as the Upper School chapel for the past sixty years. He pointed out that whether it was being used as a gymnasium—as it was originally intended—or to facilitate the training of the Chamberlayne Cadet Corps—as it was used during the Great War—the space has always been about bringing people together and building community.

Following the barbeque in the Historic Corridor on Saturday afternoon, the classes of '69, '74, '79, '84, '89, '94, '04, '09, and '14 enjoyed class parties at homes off campus.

Mark your calendars for Reunion Weekend next year, May 1-2, 2020.
