Baseball finishes as state runner-up

Great season comes to an end, 7-4 to Benedictine.
After winning the 2018 state VISAA Division I baseball title, the most earnest and devoted Saints baseball fan would have admitted that a repeat trip to the title game in 2019 may have been a little far-fetched.

Seven starters were set to graduate, including state player of the year Nick Biddison '18 (Virginia Tech) and ace pitcher Maddison Furman '18 (VCU).

But this precocious group of young men accomplished the feat, knocking off Collegiate in five innings in the semifinals 11-1 before falling to top-seeded Benedictine 7-4 in a slugfest at Shepherd Stadium.

The Saints, seeded second, took a 3-0 lead before BCP took a 4-3 lead. StC then tied the game at 4 in the top of the fifth inning before the Cadets answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. More seniors are departing, namely ODU-bound Patrick Routsis '19, pitcher Charlie Vozenilek '19 and power-hitter DayMone' Fleming '19 (Randolph-Macon, football).

But the Saints are returning many strong players, led by shortstop Griff O'Ferrall '21, that make a third trip to Shepherd Stadium that much more probable in 2020.
