Tennis VISAA State Champs

Caps unbeaten season with a 5-0 victory over Potomac.
Head of school Mason Lecky asked captain Joe Beck '19 if the state final match would go to doubles. Incredulous, Beck responded, "Oh, this will go into doubles."

Surprisingly and impressively, the Saints didn't need doubles, topping Potomac 5-0 Saturday to win the state VISAA Division I tennis championship.

Captain Alaister Burke '20 clinched the match, winning his matchup at No. 1 10-7, and the Saints rushed the court in jubilation.

Will Thompson '22 won 10-4 at No. 2, Talman Ramsey '21 10-8 at No. 3, Eli Bemiss '20 10-2 at No. 4 and Brendon Engel '23 10-4 at No. 6.

"I'm at a loss for words," Burke said. "We went undefeated. I'm just so glad we came out on top at the end and achieved our goals that we set out for at the beginning of the season."

The entire starting lineup returns in 2020 for StC, including a freshman (Thompson) and an 8th grader (Engel).

This season looks like it just might be the beginning of something truly remarkable.

"I think today we really proved something," Burke said. "I'm just really proud of this group of guys, and I think next year is going to be even better."
