Lacrosse ends season 19-1

Saints cut lead to 8-7 going into fourth, but it wasn't enough.
The historic varsity lacrosse season ended Friday in the state VISAA semifinals, as the Saints fell 11-9 to Paul VI at Randolph-Macon College Friday.

After going ahead 2-0 early in the first period, StC went scoreless well into the second period as the Panthers took a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

An incredible goal from Luke Valentine '19 off a feed from Will Tazewell '20 right before the halftime horn cut the PVI lead to 7-4 and gave StC momentum. The Saints would beat PVI 3-1 in the third to bring the game within a goal, 8-7.

But the Saints couldn't muster enough offense to tie or take the lead, and PVI struck back-to-back late in the fourth quarter to keep the Saints at bay.

This team was truly dominant, going 19-1 on the season, holding the VISAA's #1 ranking for the entire season and garnering two national rankings. Several talented seniors will graduate, including college-bound Hartley Jordan (VMI), Davis Gillenwater (Mercer), Luke Valentine (Sewanee) and Jack Westfall (Sewanee). But the cupboard is far from bare for the 2020 season behind returning captain Walker Wallace '20 (Cornell), Porter Lewis '20 (Army), Jeff Moore '20 (VMI), Will Tazewell '20 and Spalding Hall '21, to name a few.
