First grade boys enjoy "Balloons over Broadway" BUILD activity
First grade boys designed their own Thanksgiving Day Parade floats using balloons, straws, and Sharpies.
Just before Thanksgiving, Mrs. Marks' class heard the story Balloons over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Parade. The boys were then encouraged to "Think, plan, cooperate, and have fun" as they designed their own floats for the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Boys brought their ideas to life using balloons, straws, construction paper, tape, and Sharpies.
This activity was part of our BUILD program, (Boys Using Innovation to Learn and Design). BUILD is the pedagogical intersection of best practices for boys (project-based learning, technology-infused applications, competition, hands-on experiences) and several Essential Qualities for Leadership:
