Lacrosse Overpowers Woodberry on Senior Day

by Miller Farley '18
The Seniors on the Varsity Lacrosse Team sure made the most of what might've been their last game ever on Knowles Field, knocking down storied rival Woodberry Forest by a score of 13 to 7.

Tuesday, May 8th was Senior Day for the Saints, as seven players said goodbye to their home stand in style. Michael Chapman, Burke Widhelm, and RJ Wilkinson started back defending the cage, Will Bird started at defensive middie, and Justin Jasper, Jack Franko, and Hunter Meck came on to lock down the Saints' victory.

Things got off to a quick start for the Saints as Hartley Jordan '19 fired in two goals in a minute to open the scoring, and that was the main story as STC's quick offense had the Tigers reeling for the majority of the afternoon. St. Chris was consistent throughout the contest when it came to goal-scoring, as eight different Saints hit the net, and the thirteen goals produced by those players is surprisingly low for the absolute barrage of shots Woodberry's goalkeeper had to face, thirty-two to be exact.

On the other side of the field, the defense played smart and effectively, as the Widhelm-Wilkinson duo led the way in shepherding Tigers away from the goal. Two standout sophomores for the Saints were George Hodgson and Cole McCoy; Hodgson has played an important role all season and had a few vital clears for the Saints this game. McCoy starts as a longstick midfielder on faceoffs, and when a few Saints defenders got tired legs Coach Burke took no hesistation in sending McCoy back to join the defensive unit, and McCoy's tenacity and brutal physicality contributed to the Saints' overall manhandling of the Woodberry attackers.

All in all, the Saints had no problem on offense or defense this game, even though the Tigers kept it close in the first half. St. Christopher's goes on to close out the regular season at Collegiate, in arguably the most important game of the season. If the Saints emerge victorious, they could clinch the 8 seed for the VISAA State Tournament, and subsequently a first-round home game. The Cougars have played well this season, but STC is ready to rise to the occasion against their cross-town rival.
