Upcoming Holy Week services in Upper School

A message from Upper School chaplain Whitney Edwards
Dear Friends,

In just over a week's time we will be on the cusp of Easter, when our chapel will again be filled with hopeful readings and joyful hymns. And yet, to get there, we will need to travel through the final week of Lent, a time holy to millions of people across the world, called Holy Week. During that week (March 26-30) we will add to our daily chapel an optional midday Maundy Thursday eucharist service and a Good Friday service. Details of these two services are included below. Families and friends are especially welcome to attend both.

Yet, while Holy Week is filled with universal themes of hope, betrayal, injustice, suffering and the truth that love will ultimately outlast them all, we are very much aware and grateful for the diversity of faith traditions and beliefs held within this community. For those for whom this season resonates, please join us in the journey; for those for whom it does not, please contact me and let me know how we might best honor your family’s faith traditions in the course of the year.

Maundy Thursday (3/29)

Students, families, faculty, and staff are invited to our Upper School Chapel for an optional service of eucharist 1:00 -1:30 p.m., in which students will lead us through the remembrance of the fateful last supper Jesus had with his students before being arrested. The eucharist is a service in which a very simple communion (of a small bit of bread and wine) is shared in memory of the meal Jesus shared with his followers on the eve of his trial and crucifixion. Students will preach, pray and distribute the bread. Those in attendance will be welcome, but not required, to come forward to receive. They will also have the option of receiving a blessing instead of communion. Families are especially welcome to join us. If you will be attending, please notify the chaplain’s office by March 27if you would like us to order you a complimentary boxed lunch to share with your son after the service or carry with you as you go on about your day.

Good Friday (3/30)

In a poignant service filled with song and story, we remember the extent to which God goes to not only demonstrate a vision for a new world, but to usher it in with a loving and costly sacrifice. You are welcome to join us as we meditate on the cross and what it has to teach us about grace. The service begins at 11:40 a.m. in the Upper School Chapel, and the boys will be dismissed from school as the service concludes just after 12:00 p.m.

Abundant Blessings,

The Rev. Whitney Edwards
