Saints Cruise Past Cadets to Capture State Title

By Jack Franko '18
After winning 11 consecutive VISAA State Championships from 2002 to 2012, the St. Chris wrestling team had come up short for the past five years in very close contests, mostly against archrival Benedictine.

The Saints left no doubt on Saturday with a dominant win in which seven out of their fourteen wrestlers took home individual state titles.

Freshman Erik Roggie won a state title at 106 pounds by defeating top-seeded Brendan Barnes (BCP) in their championship match. Captain Trey Ashby '18 followed Roggie up with a 3-0 win of his own at 113 to capture his first state title after four years of wrestling at STC.

Connor Alexander '19 won his third state title in as many years with a close win over Benedictine's Josh Yost at 132 pounds. Gray Hart '18 won his second straight individual state championship with a dominant 22-9 win over Riley Vaughan (BCP). The win also sealed the early team victory for the Saints.

Jackson Turley '19 also wrapped up his third state title, this time at 170 pounds, by cruising past Woodberry's Davis Smith 12-4.

The most anticipated match of the night came in the 182-pound final between Carter Davis '18 and Benedictine's Bailey Coates. Davis got an early takedown in the first period and rode it out for a 3-1 win and his second state title.

Senior captain Jens Ames grabbed his second consecutive state title at 220 pounds with a close 3-2 victory over Isaiah Jones (BCP). The match was tied 1-1 late in the third period when Ames threw Jones for the 2-point takedown and eventual win.

The Saints will look to continue their success this coming Friday and Saturday at the National Prep Tournament at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.
