Remembering Rich Hudepohl

St. Christopher's mourns the loss of longtime math teacher, mentor and coach.
Earlier this week we lost Rich Hudepohl, a longtime faculty member and a beloved member of the St. Christopher's community. Rich served St. Christopher's for over thirty years as both a Middle and Upper School math teacher, as a Bulldog football coach and J.V. basketball coach, and most recently as Upper School Mathematics Department Chair. He also led many student trips to Europe.

Last January, Rich spoke in Upper School chapel about various images and depictions of Saint Christopher that he found in churches, museums, and art galleries in his travels overseas. Rich said, "After my years of searching for Saint Christopher, I like to think that Dr. Chamberlayne was more intentional than the urban myth suggests {in choosing the school's namesake}...perhaps he viewed the school as serving a similar role to the saint—helping to provide safe passage for boys across the troubled waters of growing up into men." Rich embodied this vision of the school in his service as a teacher, mentor and coach. We know that Saint Christopher has at last found him as he makes his journey to the other side. We will miss him dearly.

A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23226, on Saturday, January 20, 2 p.m.
