Middle School band teacher Mrs. Long using "band bucks" to motivate boys to practice and learn
Band bucks are awarded for extra practice and learning outside of the classroom.
As part of her work with the 2017-2018 Saints Action Research team, Middle School Band Teacher Leslie Long has been investigating the effect of gamifying instrument practice on the self-motivation and musical curiosity of her students. Since September, Mrs. Long has been awarding band bucks to boys for extra practice and learning outside of the classroom. For example, boys collect bucks for taking the initiative to figure out the chorus of a pop song, for playing a challenging section of band music to a pet or sibling or for achieving a top position on Music Racer's (a website which encourages instrument practice) leaderboard.
This week the boys celebrated the end of the semester by cashing in on their hard-earned bucks at the first band bucks auction. Congratulations to George Thompson '22 and Mac Mueller '22 for earning the most band bucks during the semester.
