Sportable shares its mission with Lower School boys

Boys hear from disabled athlete and participate in para-sports
Sportable is a Richmond-area nonprofit organization that transforms the lives of people with physical and visual disabilities through sports. Not only does Sportable work to change the lives of the athletes it serves, it also strives to change attitudes in the community about disabled athletes. Part of its outreach includes "Changing Perceptions," a community-engagement program that reached 5,000 Richmond-area students in 2015.

That program visited St. Christopher's this week, offering Lower School boys in Coach Jack O'Donnell's PE class a chance to consider participating in sports from the perspective of a disabled athlete. The boys heard from one of Sportable's athletes, who answered questions and encouraged them to use sports as a place to challenge themselves to work beyond their limitations.

The boys got to practice wheelchair basketball and to play volleyball using only their upper bodies to move around the floor and take shots on the opposing team.

Thank you, Sportable, for sharing your talented program staff and athletes with the St. Christopher's community!
