Saints clinch third in Prep with win over Cougars

by Shelton Moss '17
Alex Petrie '17 led all scorers with 20 points, while freshman Joe Bamisile chipped in 14 and three triples, and the varsity basketball team clinched third-place in the Prep League as they defeated crosstown rival Collegiate 56–53 at the SEAL Center on Friday night.

The two teams found themselves in a back-and-forth contest in the first quarter, with Collegiate having the early step. St. Chris did not lead until early in the second, thanks in no small part to the shooting of Bamisile, who connected on three 3-pointers and also chipped in five rebounds for a stellar performance.

Not to be outdone was Justin Jasper '18, who was active in nearly every facet. The All-Prep selection from a year ago awoke from his slump with 13 points, including a pair of beautiful finishes at the rim for an old-fasioned three-point play. He was also a perfect 9-of-9 at the charity stripe.

Though the Saints (19–8, 8–4 Prep) let an eight-point second quarter lead slip to just one before half, they quickly turned on jets, outscoring the Cougars by five in the third and setting the tone for the rest of the half. Though Collegiate (17–9, 7–5 Prep) made the visitors sweat it out until the very end, St. Chris took care of the ball and made just enough free throws to preserve the victory. The win avenged a January 17th setback to their archrival in Scott Gym.

Ameer Bennett '17 also had seven points and five boards, while fellow senior Jack Essex had two points off a beautiful assist from Petrie in the first half. The Saints shot 42% as a team and 81% (21-of-26) from the line.

Collegiate was led by Evan Justice's 17 points, while big-man Jack Wyatt notched 16, though he fouled out midway through the final quarter. The Cougars (0-for-13) did not make a three the entire night.

With the win, the Saints won at least eight games in the Prep League for the third consecutive year. More importantly, by clinching the third seed, the Saints avoided having to play top-seeded Trinity (30–1) in the semifinal round, instead playing the winner of #2 STAB and #7 Christchurch.

The team will take on Fork Union in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, February 21st at 6:00pm in Scott Gym.
