9/11 to Now

Fall 2013
In September 2010, Dr. Smith launched a new course “9/11 to Now,” a semester-long course that seniors take as one of their requirements for graduation. The class focuses on the tragedy of 9/11 as a seminal event in U.S. History, one that changed and continues to change our country in significant ways. This program offers you the opportunity to step directly into our academic environment and share our students’ experience.

"9/11 to Now" Topics Will Include:
  • Before al Qaeda – The Muslim Brotherhood, Sayyid Qutb, Western colonization, and the seeds of contemporary Islamic extremism.
  • After World War II: The Holocaust, the partition of Palestine, and the emergence of post-colonial Arab nations.
  • The War against Modernity: Khomeini’s Iran, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden and the mujahideen.
  • After 9/11: “Never Again” and Homeland Security.
  • National Security and Civil Liberties – a difficult balance.
  • After bin Laden: Why Pakistan’s Tribal Areas and Yemen matter to the U.S.
The class will use a combination of information sources (text, video, Internet) to investigate each of the topics above. Discussion by and questions from the participants will be a top priority in each session.
