Gillenwater '17 commits to Sewanee

Lacrosse keeper stopped 109 shots in 2016.
Jack Gillenwater '17, set to be a three-year starter in goal for the Saints, committed to Sewanee Tuesday.

Gillenwater stopped 109 shots this past season for StC, and picked up 33 groundballs.

"When I went out to Sewanee in the fall, I stayed with [Sewanee lacrosse player] Thomas Lynde '15 and loved it," Gillenwater said. "I love coach [Marty] Waters a lot. He really fits my personality. I liked the small-size school. It fit me better academically and athletically."

Gillenwater didn't seriously consider any other schools for lacrosse, and knew Sewanee was the right fit to continue his lacrosse career. But he has unfinished business at StC.

"My sophomore year I started off with a bunch of senior defenders that helped me out a lot," Gillenwater said. "Last year I was the only returning starting defensive player. Stepping into that main role-model position was awesome and I look forward to doing that again this year.

"[At Sewanee] I'll be behind other goalies, so I have to make sure that I'm on top of my game and getting everything done in the classroom to be ready next fall.

"I'd like to thank my parents, coach [John] Burke and coach [Sherman] Horner for helping me through this process."
