Prata '16 headed to Virginia Tech

Star wrestler chooses top-five program in the country.
Two-time National Preps champion Joey Prata '16 will continue his wrestling career at Virginia Tech.

The 120-pounder chose the Hokies over Missouri, Virginia, American and Lehigh, among many others.

"Overall, their facilities are really nice," Prata said. "Their head coach, coach [Kevin] Dresser, he really treats their wrestlers like they're famliy. And I'm looking forward to being a part of their family."

With one year left, Prata is already one of the most decorated St. Christopher's wrestlers in school history.

He's a back-to-back National Preps champion (2014 -106 pounds; 2015 - 113), and a multiple Prep League and VISAA state champ.

He's won 50 or more matches in two of his three seasons, and has a career record of 146-22.

"It's really good for Joey," Saints coach Ross Gitomer said. "He's got a smile on his face every day and he's always trying to get better.

"He's going to have to prove himself [at the college level]. He loves challenges. The future's bright for him...I'm excited to see what happens with him."

Prata, also a National Greco Roman champ, is the Saints only captain this year. The team is youthful, but has talent.

"We're definitely looking strong this year," Prata said. "In nationals, I think we can place top 10 again. So, it'll be a good year."
