No Shave November raises $720 for V Foundation for Cancer Research

Students and faculty sport facial hair to grow awareness of men's health issues
In the "miscellaneous" section of the Upper School handbook you'll find the following restriction:

Hair must be neat and of reasonable length. No facial hair is permitted; sideburns must not grow past the ear.

However, during the month of November, Upper School faculty and administration encouraged participation in "No Shave November," an annual facial hair-growing competition to raise awareness of men's health issues including prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide.

Starting on November 1st, 15 students and 9 faculty members paid $10 to enter the contest. After Thanksgiving, a donation jar for each participant was set out on a table outside Ryan Dining Hall, and the community began to vote by putting money into them. Change added to the participants' total, while all bills subtracted from the total.

After a week of putting money into the jars, Upper School Math Teacher Jon Waite determined the winners by counting the highest net dollar amount after subtracting the amount in bills in each jar from the total amount in change.

The Upper School History deparment had a strong showing, with History teachers Tune and Abbott earning the titles of overall winner and secod place finisher with final totals of $51.24 and $35.25, respectively. Neil Divedi was the student winner with an official final total of $32.15.

100% of the donations will benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
