Mitchell, defense lead Saints to 4th straight win

by Shelton Moss '17
Senior wideout Hayden Mitchell hauled in two long touchdown passes, quarterback John Damard '17 threw for over 300 yards and ran for a score, and the Saints defense shutout Paul VI in a 35–0 victory on Friday night in Fairfax.

St. Chris (4–2) got on the scoreboard first as Damgard found the endzone on a 13-yard keeper in the first quarter. On the very next drive, the Saints signal-caller hooked up with Mitchell for a 54-yard touchdown pass, putting the visitors up 14–0.

In the third quarter, Damgard found Mitchell again, this time for a 75-yard touchdown strike that put the game out of reach. Rushing touchdowns by Justin Jasper '18 (5 catches, 108 receiving yards) and Jens Ames '18 provided for the final margin.

On the day, Mitchell caught four passes totalling 159 yards. Damgard was 13-of-22 passing for 306 yards with no picks. Defensively, the Saints were led by Paul Thompson '17, who totalled 14 tackles. Fellow senior D.T. Badley recorded two sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. As a unit, the Saints defense held the Panthers (1–6) to 6-of-15 on third-down conversions, and did not allow a redzone score in three chances.

St. Chris will look to win its fifth straight game for the first time since 2004 as they battle the Cardinals of Bishop Ireton on Saturday, October 22nd. Kickoff is set for 3:00 pm.
