Damgard's record-setting day lifts Saints in shootout

by Shelton Moss '17
Quarterback John Damgard '17 threw for a school-record 419 yards and six touchdown passes, and the Saints varsity football team put up a season-high in points and total offense en route to a wild 50–42 victory over Prep League rival Fork Union on Friday afternoon.

The game got off to a shaky start for St. Chris (3–2, 1–0 Prep), trailing 14–7 at the end of the first quarter. From that point on, however, the Saints reeled off 40 unanswered points, featuring five touchdown passes by Damgard to five different receivers. Hayden Mitchell '17 led the way with two touchdown catches of 59 and 65 yards. On the day, Mitchell had seven receptions for 226 yards, breaking another single-game school record.

Juniors Justin Jasper and Thomas Caravati, and seniors Darby Hatcher and Sheldon Towell all got in on the scoring parade with TD catches of their own in a game that featured a combined 92 points and 994 yards of total offense. Additionally, Damgard's 28 completions were also a program record.

The Saints had to hold off a furious Fork Union (1–5, 0–1 Prep) rally, as the Blue Devils scored two touchdowns in the final five minutes, then recovered an onside-kick late with a chance to tie the game. But the Saints defense held, preserving the victory to put the team above .500 for the first time this season.

St. Chris will go for its fourth straight victory this Friday, October 14th, as they travel up the road to take on Paul VI. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
