Thomas '16 commits to Virginia Tech

Sprinter chose the Hokies over Syracuse.
St. Christopher's sprinter Brandon Thomas '16 committed to Virginia Tech recently to continue his track and field career.

Thomas chose the Hokies over Syracuse and other suitors. There was just something about Tech.

"I've talked to numerous coaches, but I could tell it was something different about Virginia Tech," Thomas said. "When I went up on my visit there, it sounds kind of corny, but it felt special. I could tell [sprint and relay coach Tim Vaught] really cares about the kids he's taking care of and watching over for track."

After dealing with knee injuries early in his career, Thomas rehabbed and got stronger, becoming the school's record holder in the 55-meter dash (6.37). He won the 55, 300 and helped the 4x400 team to state VISAA titles indoors this winter, capping it off with a championship win in the 55 at Easterns in New York.

Thomas is also a force in the long jump, and just as successful outdoors, holding Prep and VISAA titles on the 400-meter oval as well.

Thomas was also recently named MileStat Athlete of the Year for the VISAA
